A recent report from Nikkei reveals that Capcom would like to increase the number of titles that are released in the Resident Evil franchise per year.
Part of the reason, they explain, is the declining sales of the series. By increasing the number of games released, they hope to increase revenue. In order to keep up with the developmental burden, they state that they would continue to outsource aspects of development to western studios.
I’m all for more games, but I could easily see how this could potentially have a negative impact on the series. If the sales are suffering, rather than simply releasing more games, it might be time to take a look at the games themselves and go back to the drawing board. Simply flooding the market with more Resident Evil games could make the franchise stale. Unless, of course, they are ominously planning on the series migrating towards other genres.
What’s that old saying about quality over quantity, Capcom?
